Look no further, we’ve got your Mojo right here! No, notMoe-Joe as in Austin Powers lost his. This boy is Moe-Hoe of the Spanishpronunciation. Here, listen to this.

Mojo is a purebred Xolo who was born on Nov. 26, 2010. Hisfoster mom, Elizabeth, picked him up from a high kill shelter in Delaware where his ownerhad dropped him off just after his first birthday. Mojo’s skin was in terribleshape and he was so skinny!

Mojo has filled out and muscled up considerably. His skin isstill on the mend but healing up nicely! He weighs about 35 pounds now whichmakes him a Standard Xolo. Elizabethexpects that he’ll grow a little bit taller and gain more muscle as he movesthrough his second year of life.

Mojo turned a year old just this past November but he isstill very much a puppy! (Xolos are aprimitive breed that reach emotional maturity much later than other breeds. Thebrain fairy pays each Xolo a visit around their 4^th birthday, giveor take a couple of months.) Mojo is playful and enthusiastic. He stillhas “puppy paws” and runs like he’s not entirely sure where everything issupposed to go. Sometimes he can be timid around the other dogs and getsbullied a little bit but mostly that’s because he’s annoyed them too much bywanting to play all the time!

Mojo has picked up training quite well! He’s 99% pottytrained with only the very occasional accident these days. So far he’s learnedto sit and that doing so immediately brings treats! Lots of treats! He’s nowtotally enthused about this whole sitting thing and doesn’t so much sit asFLING his little bottom on the ground while looking expectantly at Elizabeth.

Mojo is curious about the resident cat and will bark at himif the other dogs bark. He doesn’t seem to have any real issue with cats ingeneral. His foster mom says that she would trust him with both cats and kids.

Mojo’s favorite things are playing, either with Elizabeth or the otherdogs, and snuggling. He loves playing fetch using a ball or soft toy. (I must saythat if you are looking for a dog to play fetch with, Xolos are your breed! Igrew up training Labs and not a one fetched as well, happily or willingly as aXolo!)

Elizabethis still working on convincing him to only chew on approved chewy toys and NOTfurniture, etc. She thinks that he’s still teething to some extent. (Notuncommon in this breed at this age because of their dentition). Elizabeth has convincedMojo that her arm really isn’t an actual chewy toy. Ah, puppies. He’s still abit mouthy which isn’t uncommon for Xolos. As I mentioned above, emotionalmaturity comes late to these guys.

Mojo isn’t real big on the winter wear. He’s more of aclothing optional kind of guy. And that’s cool because who doesn’t love a nakedtushy running around their house? Mojo gets so upset about wearing a sweaterthat for now we’re taking it slow. It’s possible that he associates wearing asweater with being dumped at the kill shelter.

They tell me I'm supposed to like sweaters.

Wally's World – Chapter 3 – BUSTED!

I live in a homefor foster dogs. In this home there isone gentle, easily trainable, wooly little lamb. There also resides an agressive 'Devil Dog'. Two dogs, you say? Nope, just me – wonderfulWally! Let me backtrack a little. When Ifirst was picked up, my family was told I was a 'lady's dog' and I hatedmen. I also was about 5 pounds overweight.

Mom was firm with me right fromthe get go. She cut me off of all mydelicious people food cold turkey. Itwas dog food or nothing. I lost a poundor two rather quickly, but then hunger took over, and I started twirling aroundlike a ballerina when dog food was set before me. I thought it best to let everyone know that Irequired special attention from mom, and would growl and show my ugly facewhenever dog or person came near. That new mom of mine called the Xolo Rescue League for help. And, darn it – they didn't ignore her, butthey came to her rescue with the advice she needed. She consistently followed their instructions,and wore me out. I quit growling atothers. Now, her Boston Terrier hasbecome my best girlfriend. I alsoenjoyed walking with mom, my Boston girlfriend, and her two non-walkers intheir stroller. Mom has a very quickpace, and we don't stop for anything, so I have to concentrate on trottingalong and watching mom for when we have to make a turn so I don't get allmuddled up in the stroller wheels. Mom enjoyed my company so much, she decided to adopt me herself. Ahhh –no more worries! That is, until herhusband came into the picture.

He was a realproblem for me. When he came near me – Iapplied my ugly, growling lips, and, even though mom always got after me forthis behavior, it seemed worthwhile for me to bite the bullet of her displeasure,and keep him out of my life. He learnedit was better if he just stayed away from me. Whenever he tried to be nice to me, if the growling didn't work – I'dstretch up to my highest height, and bark at him steadily with my ear-piercingbark until he backed off. Again, notappreciated by my mom, but with him I wouldn't give in. I used my most horrible behavior because I had the 'I'dbeen so abused and beaten by men in my past' card. The first time mom left mealone with her husband, I made him chase me all around the house. I peed everywhere inside the house, andrefused to go outside for him. I thoughtthat would fix everything, and mom would never leave me alone with him everagain. Wrong. Next time I got put on aleash, and, well, it was kind of exhausting last time we were together, whenshe still left us, we just mutually decided to put up with eachother. Can't seem to get rid of thisman. So, I thought – and I think a lot – I must try another strategy.

I go to bed with mom. She really needs her sleep badly. I'm happy to go to bed early with her. However, when her husband shuts off thecomputer and starts getting the house shut down for the night – I kick into actionand start barking at the top of my lungs – good, sharp, all business barkinguntil he gets into bed. Then, one day,when I thought it was time he got to bed – I barked loud and strong until hegave in and came to bed. All wasprogressing quite nicely, until, I took it just a little too far one night, andwhen he came to the bed I lunged at him in the 'attack, I'm going to kill you'mode. Busted.

Mom's husband packed mybags that night, and wanted me out! Mylife with them would never be the same. Mom wasted no time, and talked with my vet, a dog trainer in town, ande-mailed the Xolo Rescue League for emergency help. Everyone helped her, andthat very next day plans were put into place. Instead of shipping me off toanother home, the way it's always worked for me in the past – they decided togive me one last chance. But, the rules have change. Mom has deserted me, and, they have decided Iam now “Dad's” dog. From the time he comes home from work, until he goes to bedat night, I am on my leash by his side. Mom no longer lets me cuddle beside her.I no longer am allowed to go to bed with her at night. I have become dad's slave. I now sleep on a dog cushion on thefloor. I've stopped barking at dad, anddon't even give him my ugly lip. We evengo walking outside together.

Sponsoring: What Does It Mean?

We’re only in the first days of the New Year and we’re alreadybeing ambushed by those ASPCA commercials with the Sarah McLachlan songs andterrified dogs shaking behind bars of cages that they will die in if we don’t Sponsorthem now. Right now! These commercials make me want to rip my heart out andstomp all over it! They are heartbreaking but they do get right to the point.We can’t save dogs without your help.

What does it mean to sponsor a dog (or cat or horse orrabbit)?

According to Dictionary.com, Sponsor is a noun and a verb. ASponsor is a person who makes a pledge or promise on behalf of another. ToSponsor is to act as sponsor for; promise, vouch, or answer for.

Maybe you’re not in a position to adopt or foster a dog butyou want to help in some way. Sponsoring a dog is a great way to help!

How do you sponsor a dog? It’s easy actually. All it takesis a gift to Xolo Rescue League for a specific dog. It doesn’t have to be alarge sum of money. Every penny counts and together we are an ocean. A Sponsorcan donate $10 or $50 or $100 – as much or a little as they want and canafford.

Why are sponsors important? Because you make it possible forus to provide medical care and food for our dogs. Without sponsors, we couldn’tkeep doing what we do. Vet care is expensive, the high quality food thathairless dogs require is expensive, flying dogs from kill shelters anddangerous situations to foster homes is expensive.

Esme is one of our dogs who could really use a sponsor.

Esme is just four months old and weighs in at a whopping 6pounds! She has something called anterior segment dysgenesis. This means thather eyes never formed properly. She’s completely blind in her right eye and hasvery little sight in her left eye. Her right eye will be removed to relievepressure caused by glaucoma and we will try to save what little vision she hasin her left eye.

Esme’s foster mom, Paula, has this to say;

“Thetreatment for her glaucoma is cosopt drops. With the drops, we might preserveher remaining sight. Sometimes in young puppies, the drops are effective forlife... The drops are about $90 a bottle and a bottle lasts four to sixweeks. She'd need them three times a day, every day for life. She would needfrequent check ups with a veterinary Opthomalogist to monitor her eyes.” Paula goes on to say

“Despite all this awful news, Esme is a great puppy! Thepeople at UGA loved her, she was passed around by the students a fair bit, anda few jokingly offered to take her home. She is very, very capable around ourhouse, she goes up and down stairs, chases the other dogs and is quite fast.She is doing great on her house training and has a good sit already. This is agood good puppy, she'll be a great baby for someone. She's sleeping in my lapas I write this, and is so worth all the effort.”

Eve is Xolo Rescue League’s newest addition! Her temporary fostermom, Carole, named her Eve because she pulled Eve from a high kill shelter in Los Angeles on ChristmasEve.

Eve came into the shelter as a stray. She was found on afield by herself and was absolutely terrified. Carole heard about Eve whenpeople started posting her picture and situation to her Facebook page. Sheimmediately went to work looking for a foster home and networking like crazy tofind a rescue group to take this poor dog in. Xolo Rescue League told Carole togo get Eve and we’d figure out the rest from there!

Eve is in bad shape both physically and emotionally. She hasopen sores all over her back and her skin is in terrible condition. She isscared out of her wits and trusts no one. As soon as Carole had her home, Evehid under the dresser in the spare bedroom. She gobbles down food like it’s herfirst and last meal. She is finally coming out to lie on the big dog bed in thespare room. Eve will soon go to her long term foster home near San Franciscowhere our wonderful volunteer, Christy, will help Eve learn that she is safenow and can finally just be a dog.

This may be the softest, warmest bed that Eve has ever known

Eve is going to require a lot care to heal her skin. She’llneed plenty of vet visits, antibiotics, medicated shampoos and the highestquality food we can find. Once healthy enough she will be spayed and then beavailable for adoption.

Esme and Eve are just two examples of our dogs thatdesperately need sponsors to help them get the medical care that they need. Butit’s not just dogs with health problems that need a sponsor. All of our dogsare worthy of sponsorship. They all need to be neutered and vaccinated andeventually shipped to their forever homes.

California Dreamin' Dude

Hey Brah... California is totally gonna party for the Xolos.

Sorry, that's my best California Surfer Dude impression. Don't hate me, I've only been to California twice. Once when I was 2 and then again when I was in my early twenties. Or was it early 30's? Both times I went to San Francisco and it was way too cold for anybody but the sea lions to be surfing.

My point is that we are having a fundraiser in Arcadia, California! The Xoloitzcuintli Club of America is hosting a fundraiser for Xolo Rescue League at the America's AKC Santioned "A" Match. I have no idea what that means but what's important is that 100% of the proceeds from that day will go directly to XRL! There will be contests of Tricks and Costumes! There will be food and a silent auction! Well here, look for yourself.

Pelon; The Most Interesting Dog In The World

Sharks have a week dedicated to him.

He once taught a German Shepherd to bark… in Russian.

He never says anything tastes like chicken… Not evenchicken.

Pelon has been in foster with Xolo Rescue League longer thanany of our other dogs. Not because there is anything wrong with him but becausethe best dogs take the longest to find the right home. It’s true. I’ve trainedfosters as service dogs and had them for over 9 months. This is one of thoseweird, unwritten rules of foster. The best dogs take the longest to choosetheir homes. Pelon has been in foster for a year and a half.

Pelon is a laid back dude originating from California. He was found chained up in abackyard, left there to fend for himself when his people moved away. A goodneighbor took pity on Pelon and brought him to a local shelter where he wasneutered and cared for to the best of their ability. The poor little guy hadbeen out in the Californiasun and had open sores on his head, ears and chest! The chest sores were fromhim compulsively licking himself due to stress. To top it all off, the neuterincision became badly infected. Poor Pelon must have felt so awful!

Before moving to his current foster home, Pelon had atemporary stop over at another foster home. They made good progress and got himon the road to recovery but he still had a long way to go when he arrived athis next home. His foster mom, Elizabeth, convinced Pelon that he no longerneeded to lick himself raw but then she found out that she had to move to theother side of the country and would no longer be able to foster him!* Elizabeth brought Pelon to his new foster home in Tennessee on her way to Virginia but he was not having any of it. Hewanted his foster mommy back and he was gonna get her! Pelon put on quite theshow in Tennesseeand after five months he got his way. The foster home said that Pelon needed togo back to Elizabethand so he did.

By this time he had started licking himself raw again. Elizabeth once againconvinced him to stop. He had immediately recognized her and his old roomies,the other dogs. He quickly settled back into their routine and has been relaxedand comfy ever since!

Pelon is approximately five years old. He’s a standard Xoloweighing in at 40 pounds. He enjoys the company of other dogs, humans and evencats! As is the case with Xolos, Pelon is energetic and playful. He’saffectionate and willing to please when given patient and positive training.Pelon enjoys taking long walks with his people, pooping in the backyard andrelaxing in his crate.

Wally's Diary: Chapter 2

This is chapter 2 in the diary of a Chinese Crested named Wally. It's been a little while since Wally's had time to write in his diary so if you need a refresher, click here for Chapter 1.

Chapter 2

Days, weeks, and now months have passed. One lady called, interested in adopting me – but when my foster mom phoned her back – she was too busy to talk, and, we never heard from her again. Mom thought the name “Wally” would be a cheerier name for me, and would help me become more easy-going than staying with my name “Bruno”. She's usually right about things – and, since I'm starting to enjoy myself here, I figured I could humor her, so... 'Wally' I am!

If you're reading this, and thinking about adopting one of us foster dogs, it's a good idea to swoop us up while the getting's good. Being a foster dog is OK but we usually have to share our new person with a bunch of 'their' dogs – so we're not 'Really Really Special' like we would be if we were in an “only dog” family. We would really enjoy being the “only dog”. Ahhhh... all the attention, all the spoiling, all the covers – don't get me drooling! Also, our foster parents take the best care of us... but also try to keep a bit detached, so when we get adopted, they won't fall to pieces missing us too much! There will always be another kid who needs to be fostered so they need to 'move on'. Now, if you wait too long, those darn foster parents are going to get too attached, (after all, can you blame them)? We are so precious – who wouldn't fall for us? And, then, they'll go and adopt us themselves, and we'll be stuck being just one of the kids – all grouped together – like Cinderella and her wicked step sisters. I speak from experience – cause that's what happened to me.

However, since I am now the carefree Wally – I'm making the best of things here, and am starting to have great fun! For some silly reason, I ended up with a bit of an ear infection. Mom wouldn't just leave it alone so off we went to the Vet. She knows very well that I don't like to be touched – my ears, especially. But did that stop them? Oh no! So, there was the Vet, carefully, very carefully, pulling hair out of my ears. Everything was quiet, they were concentrating, pulling out hair, not saying a word, and I stood there and waited – and waited – it was so still – so quiet – the scene was set, all I heard was the doctor breathing... breathing,... breathing... I took a long deep breath myself, staying very, very, very still... and then, are you ready? I flipped around in the air and screamed at the top of my lungs, as only a Chinese Crested can scream!!! That was hilarious!!! I like this happy side of me!!! Well, the Vet jumped about 3 feet backwards – tweezers in hand – and mom, of course, gasped (as if she's never heard me scream before). Vet said “Whoa! Now that scared me!!!” It was so funny, I just about peed myself! I didn't even care that the Vet put a muzzle on me after that. My day was good!

Right now, the Rescue League are putting on an auction over the internet. So, I showed mom all the things I really liked and she agreed to put a bid on them, pretty sure that she'd be outbid – but that was OK, it was just for fun. She loves auctions. The only thing she didn't know was that no one outbid her on anything!!! She was the lucky winner of all sorts of good stuff!!! Another great day for me! I can't wait to try on all my new clothes. (She'll probably make me share with my ugly stepsisters) – but that's OK – I'm enjoying this Happy Go Lucky side of life!!!

I might tell you about the fun I had with her husband in my next chapter. Other than just about being thrown in the “Slammer”, I had the best time ever!

Just one, Me. I can be up the ladder and have that bulb replaced in a flash. Then I'll tell you it's time to remove the ladder. No dog can do it better than me.

Please be more specific. Do you want that bulb replaced with a more efficient fluorescent conversion lamp, or a state of the art LED? I trust it's the latter, since we all need to do our part to curb global warming. If that's the case, then I'll submit my proposal, and if you accept it, I'll have my assistant, the Border Collie get on it immediately.

Ripley's Ticker is Tocked

This is Ripley. I could eat him on a cracker.

Xolo Rescue League took Ripley into rescue last weekend and his heart is broken. Adopted by a young couple when he was a year and a half old, Ripley was abandoned! His owners split up and didn't want him! Did you see his picture? Scroll up and look at the picture again. HOW could they not want him?

"He's yours!" said the man.
"Oh no he isn't! He's yours!" said the woman.

Ripley's heart was broken.

He was suddenly torn from his home and thrown into a strange place with a friend of the "owners". But then, oh!, then it gets worse for little Ripley. The friend took off and left the state! She did not even stick around to sign the "owner" surrender forms for XRL. Disappointment is hard, guilt eats away at us.

Xolo Rescue League is determined to turn Ripley's life around! Our wonderful volunteer, Jen, picked up Ripley last weekend and brought him home for foster. Thank you Jen! And because the vet was coming to their home on Saturday they decided to go ahead and do Ripley's intake exam and guess what, Folks.

Ripley's heart is literally broken. The vet discovered a grade 6 heart murmur. If you haven't come across a heart murmur yet, Grade 6 is as bad as it gets. This is the worst rating that can be given to a murmur.

Because Ripley is so young, he's three, the vet believes that this is a congenital condition and possibly treatable. But we won't know anything until Ripley sees a cardiologist and that's expensive, y'all.

I know I say this a lot but rescue isn't easy and it sure isn't cheap. It's heart rending, physically challenging and damned expensive. We need your help! Ripley needs your help! Be a part of the effort to mend Ripley's broken heart!

Sho Yo, Muffin and Mocha have passed away. When the first puppy died the vet thought that the cause was a congenital condition. A male puppy had already passed away while the family was still in the shelter. When another puppy succumbed and, finally a third, the vet determined that all of the puppies have a virus. They had flu-like symptoms but nothing conclusive or obvious. Kathy, their foster mommy, did everything she could to save the babies. She rushed them to the vet, sat up with them, fed them, medicated them, held them and loved them but nothing could save these sweet angels. There are not enough hankies to dry the tears that have been shed for this family.

Xolo Rescue League desperately needs help to pay the veterinary bills for continued treatment of the surviving puppies! Donations can be made to xolorescueleague@yahoo.ca via Paypal.

Lolita and Izel have tested negative to every known illness that the vet can test for so they are on an antibiotic cocktail and a special diet until given a completely clean bill of health. Until then both puppies will remain with their foster mom where they will be hugged and loved until they are ready for adoption. Lolita is doing well and eating solid food. Izel has graduated to a paste and will be eating solid food soon.

Medical care is not cheap and while we are thrilled to have raised $185 through this contest, we are not out of the woods by a long shot. To date, the veterinary bill for the puppies is close to $700 for office visits, medications and testing. Volunteers and foster homes have graciously covered as much of the cost as they can but none of us (or you) is made of money.

Manon, the puppies’ mother, has been adopted by her foster mom, Susan! Manon was also sick and required extensive medical care when we pulled her family from the shelter in California. She had a uterine infection, ear infection, needed medication as well as blood work and a heartworm test. As soon as Manon is healthy enough she’ll be spayed and finally be able to relax and enjoy her new home! All in all Manon’s medical bills will be about $850.

Have you been doing the math as we’ve gone along? It’s a lot to add up, I know.

One thousand five hundred fifty US dollars is the total in medical expenses for Manon and her pups. This doesn't include food or transport and they are worth every penny! Manon, Izel and Lolita are wonderful, wonderful dogs and we are so upset that we lost our littlest angels, Sho Yo, Muffin and Mocha.

Office Xolo Has Your Back

My first post for Xolo Your Love! Well golly! I really had no idea what to write about. This is a lot of pressure you know. First I thought I’d write about why every office would be better with a Xolo. Then I thought that maybe it would be better to write about that time when Morgan, Xolo King, scared the WooHoo! out of my 4 year old nephew and he fell over backwards, whacked his head on the corner of the end table and then taught me curse words I’d never heard before... or maybe I’d write about that other time when he scared the SweetBabyJesus! out of my neighbor… or how about that one time (at band camp) when he scared the FoShizzle! out of the new vet? Are we picking up on a theme to the Xolo King’s existence?

Then this happened at the office today...

This is Awesome Sauce

and I thought to myself “Self, you have got to go with the office theme because this note is the best thing that has ever happened in your sad little office”.

So. Here is why every office, particularly mine, would be 1000 times better with a Xolo;

1.     Xolos are more intelligent than 93.849% of your co-workers. Fact. Your Office Xolo can replace all of those morons that you never liked anyway.

2.      Xolos have smart British accents (they do) and sound an awful lot like Stewie from Family Guy (this is a scientifically accurate statement) and who wouldn’t want an Office Xolo with a smart British accent hangin’ around all day!

3.       Every day, every single damn day, for the last two years I have walked into the break room at least three times a day praying and hoping for cupcakes to appear. Every day, every single damn day, for the last two years I have been disappointed. There has never once been magical surprise cupcakes dancing on the table top, waiting for me to love them up and down. But… if I were to Irish Step Dance around the corner and find a magical surprise Office Xolo, I would completely forget about the cupcakes and be as happy as a Xolo in a hotdog cart.
                 Also, Office Xolos are gluten, dairy, egg, apple, grape, pear, fish, shellfish, nut, peanut and fat free so Score! ((Warning: While Office Xolos are certified allergen free by the USDD (US Dept of Dog, fact), we cannot make this promise of House Xolos)). (Also, this would totally work as an Excel formula because you see how all parentheses are closed. Office Xolo Bonus)!

4.       I don’t know about your office, but my office is a freaking ice box. The people who control the thermostat must be sitting on the equator. I know they aren’t sitting here with me. In the ice box. Office Xolos can be passed around like blankets on airplanes to keep you and your coworkers warm! They can be draped across shoulders, over laps and on feet! Don’t give them to the people you don’t like, they can freeze. Office Xolo does not need those bozos.

5.       Xolos have thumbs. Your Office Xolo can staple and collate for you while correcting your grammar and spelling errors and wearing a thumb condom. Right? That’s what those little rubber things are called? Thumb condoms.

6.       Xolos are extremely food motivated and eat anything. Now you have something to do with all those nasty pot-luck lunch leftovers and you can feel good about not stopping up a landfill with that crap.

7.       During lunch, your Office Xolo can help you complete the NY Times Sunday Crossword puzzle and eat that Berry Crisp that you haven’t touched.

8.       You will never have to make idle conversation about somebody else’s children doing blah, blah, blah and going to blah, blah, blah college with your Office Xolo. (Bonus: all Office Xolos are neutered. We cannot offer the same guarantee of your coworkers).

9.      Let’s up the fun factor!! What office couldn’t use some naked ass running around that can be petted, scratched, smacked and rubbed without anybody getting hauled off to jail? Here at Xolo Rescue League we're not all Xolos all the time! We rescue many different breeds of hairless and small dogs like this Chinese Crested Puppy!

Puppy #1

This little baby is one of five that were rescued with their mother from a Kill Shelter in California. All five puppies are girls (very unusual!), two are Powder Puffs and two are hairless. They were born on May 12, 2011 and will be ready for adoption in mid to late July.

Chapter One: An Introduction

Since dogs live in the moment – right here – right now, I've put the past out of my mind, and I'm having a nice little nap on the doggy bed of my choosing at this moment. My foster mom will begin my story, get you on the same page as me, so to speak, and then I'll take over writing in my diary...

Bruno was an owner surrender. Friends of the Xolo's President picked him up, in the dead of winter, and, in the black of night, in a town half way between their home and ours, we made the “exchange”. Bruno is my first foster dog – and I was so excited! I'd read a lot, prepared myself for “anything” - prepared my dogs and the house the best I could – and now we were heading home. Bruno never said a word as we drove along, but I knew he'd be a special boy. The Xolo friends we met called him a little gentleman. We got home. I must have been unpacking his things, not sure what I was doing, but Phil, my husband was trying his best to get Bruno out of his crate, and he would have none of it! Shortening this part of the story – Bruno bit my husband – Bruno stayed in his crate for the night.

I had a few days off work, so, the next morning Bruno came out for me and I tied him to myself from morning til night. My 3 resident dogs were rather curious about him, but he wanted nothing to do with them. In his eyes, it was him and me against the world - since we seemed to be attached (quite literally). One thing that surprised me was that he was totally house trained - didn't even think of lifting his leg inside anywhere. I was thrilled. That was the one thing I just couldn't stand – dogs, peeing inside my house – and here – I didn't even have to work through this training with him. He was perfect! Yup! And, I told everyone I knew, and all my new Foster Home friends as well! I had no idea why on earth anyone would surrender this dog when he was totally perfect!

Blows Dust Have you missed the XRL blog?

Most folks that are involved in rescue devote tons of time to the cause. These hours usually come after working at a regular job or three! While we all know that our four-legged (and sometimes tripod) friends really appreciate the hard work, it can make the average rescue devotee frazzled to the point of speaking in woofs and arfs instead of beautifully constructed sentences worth of Oscare Wilde or Bill Shakespeare. In my case, what usually suffers is housework. So I've figured out a few tricks of the trade to have my dogs contribute to housecleaning and regular chores and contribute to household expenses. Here's how I put the little freeloaders to work:

Bed and Pillow Warmers: It gets cold here in the midwest and I am always losing the cord for my electric blanket. Hairless dogs are like mini-heaters. Placing a hairless dog on a bed for 15 minutes will heat it up just as much as a heated blanket or mattress pad AND save money on your electric bill.

Low Maintenance Compost Bins: You know that piece of chicken that slipped off the fork as you were biting into it and hit the kitchen floor (which may not have been mopped in awhile, see the next suggestion?) The one that is past the 5-second rule? You could throw it in the garbage. Encase it in plastic and leave it to take up space in a landfill. In my case, though, I hold that chicken up like it is Simba from The Lion King and then give it to the dogs. The bonus here is that in addition to taking care of your little mess, the dogs will usually behave for at least 3 minutes after receiving a table treat. That's 3 full minutes of expectant looks and tail wagging and and chop licking in which to eat every last bite of that chicken to show them who the boss is (hint: it's Tony Danza.)

Blame Taking For Slovenly Behavior: Is it just me or does mopping really, really suck? I have all kinds of fancy mops and solutions, but at the end of the day, swabbing the deck is the last thing I want to do. Enter: dirty paws. Guests can't tell if those paw prints accumulated over a month of sloth or were the result of a prance through a puddle then a happy dance while waiting for a treat. When I have a date over and I catch him looking at the less than sparkling floor, I dismiss it as "Oh, these dogs were going nuts in the yard today and tracked all kinds of dirt in." It doesn't stop at mopping, though. My official method of doing laundry is to throw my clothes on the floor in a random array until I am out of clean underwear. It works well for me unless I have an unexpected guest. I have learned to say this very convincingly: Oh my goodness, the dog got into my laundry basket and threw the folded laundry everywhere! I'm going to have to rewash everything, but I can't be mad at him, he just missed me. This way, I come off as laid back instead of lazy. WIN WIN

Encouraging Good Fashion Choices: This one requires furry dogs. I own two big black dogs (BBDS.) Because I can never seem to locate any of the 12 lint rollers that I own, the majority of my wardrobe is black or dark brown. We all know how slimming dark colors are, so the dogs keep me motivated to wear clothes that make me look 10lbs lighter. This leaves me free to eat ice cream right out of the tub and drink real beer, not that sissy light beer crap.

Excuses, Excuses, Excuses: Believe it or not, I can sometimes be nice to a fault. I will agree to plans and then kick myself and think, "Good god, this person annoys me. Why did I agree to have drinks with him?" However, if I really don't want to go out with someone, I can easily say the dog ate something and is having various kinds of GI volcano eruptions all over the house. It not only gets me out of dreadful events, but it makes me seem like a saint for caring so much for my pooch that I'm willing to clean up and cuddle a sick dog. Again, WIN WIN.

You've Got a Xolo, Now What?

So you've added a Xoloitzcuintli to your family... congratulations! As you embark on your life together, remember that selecting an activity you can enjoy with your new dog can help strengthen your bond and be a great outlet for that mischievous xolo energy. Here are some activities in which xolos excel:

1. Obedience/Trick training - xolos are highly intelligent and learn quickly. If you enjoy clicker training you will be amazed at how quickly your dog will pick up new tricks. Xolos are problem solvers by nature and offer new and creative behaviors all the time. Consider enrolling in a class, like a Circus Dog Class, to see your dog's potential.

2. Agility - with the ability to jump sometimes up to 4' from a standstill, xolos are a natural for the agility ring. Many rescue xolos have gone on to agility ring fame, and they are wonderful to watch in action as the wind blows through their hair (or lack thereof). For instance, check out Quixote, the highest ranking agility xolo in the USA who has earned 58 agility titles, won in NADAC, ASCA, USDAA, TDAA, CPE, and AKC.

3. K9 Nosework - xolos are natural hunters, so why not hone the skills they were born with? Nosework is a safe and fun way for your xolo to release it's natural ability and make them a happier dog overall. It's also a great urban and all-weather sport as it takes very little space or equipment.

This is Milly2 and Bauble in the sun while on vacation. I treat my fosters just like one of my own and lucky Miss M2 was with me when we went to the beach for a week, she loved it.

If you have never fostered you should give it a try, yes it is hard to say goodbye to them but knowing they will be loved forever makes the bit of pain that I feel each time they go away disappear as soon as I talk with their new family's and hear the joy in their voices once they have their adopted pet home.

M2 is now a cherished member of a beautiful family in Canada. I will always be grateful for every kind hearted soul that has ever adopted one of my fosters.

Sweet Pelona needs repair

In October 2009, Xolo Rescue League worked magic in helping to rescue 9 standard xolos from a breeder "cleaning house" in Tijuana, Mexico. These dogs were kept as breeding stock, kept as livestock outside, and were severely unsocialized. When the breeder decided to get out of the business, the dogs were left in the lurch.

When word got out about the dogs, several people raised their hands to help out, but transporting dogs over the border, out of danger, into foster care was no small feat. Several organizations banded together to share volunteers and resources in order to get the 9 dogs, 3 male and 6 female, vetted and into safety. Xolo Rescue League ended up absorbing 4 of the dogs, one of whom is Pelona (the larger xolo).

Sortly after Pelona entered the program, she came into heat. This was especially strange since all the of the dogs, as a condition of rescue, had been fully vetted and spayed/neutered before leaving Mexico. Further investigation found that the spay procedure she underwent in Tijuana was not an ovariohysterectomy, but that they had simply gone in and "messed up" her reproductive organs so that she could not carry puppies but would still have heat cycles.

Fast forward two years and Pelona went in to have the spay re-done correctly. While inside, the surgeon found a complete mess: a fuid-filled uterine horn as large as a hand, adhesions throughout her abdomen involving her spleen, peritonium, omentum, bladder, small intestine and stomach, and of course the presence of in-tact reproductive organs. The surgeon was generous with his time, but it still cost an arm and a leg and XRL must now foot the bill.

A Chip-In has been started on Pelona's behalf to raise the funds needed to cover the surgery. Anything you can give is appreciated. As you can see, even with a price break the surgery costs a pretty penny, and there are new dogs entering the program as we speak.

Bobby, the foster Xolo hit by a car, is healing and his foster mom, Emmy, sends this update:

He had his follow up appointment with the regular vet [Friday]. The road rash is not infected, but it's still pretty raw. They cleaned it really well again and gave me some padding for the little pressure sore he has right near his elbow. He had a scrape there from the accident AND the splint is rubbing the spot, so it's not healing as fast as the other skin. She advised me to leave all of the skin stuff alone for a few days (not put any cream or anything on it) so it can scab over. Then I can use Aquaphor on it as it heals. The vet was pretty impressed with the splint done at the emergency clinic and when she looked at which doctor he had seen, she said we really lucked out. That guy does a LOT of orthopedic work. She said that since the original splint isn't showing any wear at all,l is staying on even without tape (which shocked her), and Bobby seems comfortable with it, it is best to leave it on for another 10 days and then re-evaluate, most likely with an x-ray, and then re-splint for another 2 weeks or so. The fact that only one of the foreleg bones broke is really, really fortunate.

I've been putting a newspaper bag over the splint when he goes out to keep it clean and dry, but she gave me an old IV bag which is much more durable (which is good, since we will likely get more snow this week).

Thanks everyone for helping out Bobby and all his hairless friends! We thought it would be cool to share some stories of Xolo Rescue League dogs, past and present. Foster mom Tracy had this story about Rico (Zack):

I work closley with animal control so I asked them if they pick up anything hairless or a hairless dog is released by it's owner to let me know. Zack (Now Named Rico) was found as a stray in a very bad section of town. As soon as I was told about him I went to the Animal Control Center to visit the "Chinese Crested" I explained to them he was actually a Xoloitzcuintli which they had never heard of and that his personality was not going to be like a Crested so they need to be careful about his adoption if he was chosen to be moved from the very high kill Regional Animal Control Center over to the no kill SPCA. I gave the very sweet dedicated over worked lady the info for the Xolo Rescue League and went on my way. Per a radio report heard in January over 15,000 dogs were brought into the center last year, only a little more than 30 were adopted last quarter so Zack's chances were not looking very good. I also contacted XRL to let them know Zack was in the kill center and that I would pull him and help transport this little guy to his foster home if they needed me to. I really did not think I would have to do anything more than pass on the information with such an unusual and exotic breed there had to be people all over waiting to help out and there would be a long waiting list of excited adopters, much to my disbeleief that was not the case at all. As requested by XRL I pulled Zack from the shelter and reluctantly agreed to foster him until a proper home could be found. I became hooked, I love how unique this breed is I have never met another dog like them. They can be so hard headed yet they will do anything their owner requests as long as that person can figure out how they are thinking. They are brave and protective yet so gentle with their family, dedicated and yet self thinkers all at the same time, yes they can be a challenge.

It took about 5 months to find a home for Zack one reason is because he guarded his toys to the point that he would refuse to eat until he knew his toy was safe, he would carry it around the house almost frantic that he could not find a safe place for it so toys had to be kept locked away unless I was home to observe him and step in just before he became too upset. He would not even allow another dog to step into the same room that he was in if he was with a toy, he would give a warning growl which I did not allow to go any further, that is when I stepped in and reminded him who was in charge of the home but I had to do it in a very gentle way or he would shut down. After a while Zack would bring the toy to me at bedtime to hide it under my pillow or behind my back. He would also carry it outside and hide it in the bushes as long as there was not anther dog watching him, he would then go potty and rush to retreieve the toy before he came back in the house. Who know why he felt so attached to anything stuffed but in his head he had to do everything he could to make sure it was safe from all other dogs. Strange thing was that he would allow people and cats to do what ever they wanted with his toy and often shared his treasure with the cats that lived in his foster home. One day something in his head just clicked and he became very relaxed with toys, he even stopped looking for them if they were put away and would even leave them forgotten in the floor, but the timing had to be on his terms it was not something that could be forced. Yes I have fallen in love with this breed and embrace each dog's unique personality.

Zack now lives in Canada with a wonderful woman who runs a rescue for cats, he has adjusted well and I have never heard another word about his obsession with stuffed toys.

I have opened my home to several dogs in need with XRL because of Zack, that little dog who was such a challange to work through with his special toy quirk will always have a place in my heart.

Poor Bobby!

Over the weekend a Xolo Rescue League foster, Bobby, was hit by a car. While the injuries will heal, the emergency room visit depleted funds at a time when 5 new dogs will be entering the program, all needing vetting.

As a response, several online businesses are banding together to raise money for Bobby and other xolos in need. We will be running a virtual sponsorship drive beginning tomorrow, Wednesday February 9th though Sunday February 13th. Each day we will offer different thank-you gifts for sponsorships of varying levels, with different businesses sponsoring the gifts of the day.

Many people have never heard of the breed, but Xoloiztcuintlis (also known as “Mexican Hairless”) were recently accepted into the AKC and are becoming more common by the day. Sadly, this means they are also susceptible to the same fates as other breeds and are beginning to show up in shelters across North America.

For people wanting an easy dog, a xolo is not for you. The breed is known for its "primitive" or "pariah" temperament type, which means that are excellent scavengers, hunters, and independent problem solvers. They are active and agile, often leaping heights twice their size from a standstill. They are natural guard dogs, very environmentally sensitive, and often bond closely to just one person. Because of their generally high prey drive, they may not be a good match with smaller animals.

On the flipside, there is nothing so wonderful as a xolo. Like a circus acrobat, they constantly entertain with their gyrations and unique movements. When they outwit you, all you can do is laugh. Since they will do anything for food, they excel at training and their drive can be channelled into appropriate competitive sports. They are expert cuddlers and the lack of hair means that you not only benefit from maximum warmth, but there is less vacuuming on a day-to-day basis. Xolos have many qualities that make them amazing pets, but if you are looking for an easy, biddable dog like a Golden or Lab, then a xolo is not for you.

It's hard to pinpoint exactly why there is an increasing number of xolos in need. It could be indiscriminate breeding, people impulse-acquiring dogs and then the temperament is too much, or just the natural course in personal taste, but whatever the reason the xolos are getting the short end of the stick. Fortunately, Xolo Rescue League is here to help.
